Houses these days seem to get smaller. I live in a new build property and whilst it’s really very lovely living in a new home, some of the rooms aren’t the most practical of sizes, the bathroom included.
I thought it would be good to pull together some ideas of how to make the most use of a small bathroom space whilst keeping it family friendly. I’ve done just that and so hopefully, if you are struggling from the same problem, you may find these tips useful.
- The first thing I did when I saw the size of our bathroom was to get some mirrors up on the walls. This instantly doubled the room size, or at the very least gave the illusion of a bigger room. It also made it much brighter, which is also a bonus.
- Keeping the colours of the walls a light and neutral colour is very important when the room is small. Darker colours won’t help if you are limited with space. Keep it light and airy. If you want to inject some colour, do so with towels or pictures on the wall.
- When thinking about tiles, use the same design on the floor as you do the walls. This automatically gives the illusion of a bigger room. As before with the colour, keep it light and neutral.
- If you have some wall space, put up some shelves and use nice storage boxes to store things in. Toilet rolls, toiletries, children’s bath toys. This way they are on hand when you need them but they don’t look cluttered. You could even use some larger shelves to store your folded or rolled towels. They look good in a salon stored like this so they will look good in your bathroom too.
- Bathroom cabinets are a great place to store medicines and other toiletries. Cabinets with a mirror like the ones at Bigbathroomshop will also help with that illusion of a bigger space that we mentioned earlier. So, if you don’t have enough space for a large mirror, if you have a smaller space for a mirrored bathroom cabinet, you get the best of both worlds.
- Under the sink storage is a great idea. If you can build a cupboard, brilliant. If not there are lots of options available for you. Shelving that sits around the sink is a great way to store all of your bottles and potions, keeping window sills, baths and sinks free of clutter.
- If you have an airing cupboard, make use of it. Whether it’s to store towels and toilet rolls or even bed linen. Make the most of the space that’s hidden behind a closed door.
- Tiered storage is a great idea to keep lots of things stored when you have very limited space. These can be stored in the corner of a room, or next to the sink to keep floor space clear.
- If you really struggle for space and can manage without a bath, think about turning your bathroom into a wet room or at the very least have walk-in showers. A wet room will also likely add value to your property.
- If you really can’t manage without a bath, perhaps a corner bath might be the way forward for you. It will save on space but still give you the luxury that a bath has to offer. It could be a lovely feature to your small room and you can use the corner above it to create a shelf to store bathroom necessities. Remember too that a walk-in bath is also an option.
If you are really sensible there are many ways you can make use of the space you have in a small bathroom. Keeping things clean and tidy will also help when you are limited with space. It’s all about being clever and hopefully, the tips I have listed here will help.
