I can hardly believe that we have reached that time of year where all the focus is on Christmas. This year has flown by in a blur of hot sunny days, rock painting and more recently autumn leaves and before we know it, Christmas will be here. I must admit, I’m a little excited.
I’m excited because this year our Christmas is going to be a little different. For the first time since our Little Man was just a week old, we are having Christmas at home and I am cooking Christmas dinner. Christmasses have been the same for so long and I’m looking forward to mixing it up a bit and enjoying our first proper Christmas at home as a family. But it’s also got me thinking about how future Christmasses might look as the Little Man grows up and something that has always appealed to me and something that I hope we can do someday, is a Christmas by the sea.
With that in mind, I’ve put together this list of reasons to enjoy a Christmas by the sea.
Christmas without the mess
The mess that comes with Christmas Day is nothing surprising but every year the house gets taken over by presents, wrapping paper, boxes, food and all sorts of other Christmas related stuff. If you are spending Christmas away, perhaps in one of the cute little holiday cottages that are available to let over Christmas, the mess you have will be minimal as you won’t have half of the things with you that you would at home. There is nothing to say you can’t make the cottage look festive during your stay. These days with pop up Christmas trees, decorating your home (albeit a temporary one) can take no time at all. And if you’re lucky, some cottages come already decorated – what a bonus! And then when you leave you can go home to a clean and tidy house – imagine the bliss!
Less pressure to host
Every year the pressure falls on someone to host the Christmas festivities. It can also create tension when deciding where to go each year if you have two sides of the family to get around. If you decide to go away with all of the family it creates a neutral territory where everyone can chip in. If it all gets too much you can step outside and take a deep breath of fresh sea air to relax your mind and body. If you do decide to go away with just your immediate family then the decision of which house to go to that year is one you don’t need to make. And of course, if you are usually the host at home, then that year, you can take a well-earned break from entertaining and feeding everyone.
A Christmas walk on the beach
Lots of people like to take a walk after Christmas lunch but just imagine taking that walk along one of the UK’s stunning coastlines. The UK has so much to offer when it comes to breaks away and Christmas is no different. Imagine the waves crashing against the shore whilst you stroll along the beach wrapped up in big coats, hats, scarves and gloves. That will be a Christmas day walk you won’t forget. Then, when you are worn out from the walk you can retreat back to a warm and cosy cottage to enjoy the rest of your Christmas Day.
It’s an extra getaway!
Traditionally, family holidays and breaks away tend to be in the Spring and Summer but if you go away at Christmas it’s an extra cheeky getaway and the perfect excuse to spend precious time together as a family making new memories. The kids can often get bored during the holidays so if you are somewhere new there will be different places to go and different things to do. And if like me, you don’t live anywhere near the sea, a short break with some sea air can do you the world of good. You can come home from your Christmas break feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, ready for the new year ahead.
If I wasn’t convinced before, then I’m certainly convinced now that a Christmas by the sea is something that I want to experience at least once in the future. Getting away from it all seems like the perfect antidote for a relaxing Christmas. I’m going to add it to my bucket list right away.
