The used car market is dynamic and sometimes too complex for inexperienced car buyers and sellers to navigate. However, understanding used car trends is critical for buyers, sellers, brokers, and dealerships. For instance, a used car dealer who understands the trends will easily identify high-demand vehicles and market them to the right audience.
So, understanding the trends in the used car market helps to sell cars fast and fetch more money. Similarly, used car buyers can take advantage of temporary shifts to find attractive deals at the local dealership.
Whether buying or selling used vehicles, one should research what drives the market and how seasonal variations, price fluctuations, client preferences, and advanced auto technology influence the used car market. This post will discuss the trends affecting the large used car market in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the UK during the first half of 2024.
High Demand for Used Cars Across the Top European Markets
Europe’s leading used car markets registered a growth in demand for used vehicles for the first half of 2024. Although this trend may not indicate what will happen during the second half of the year, it is a positive sign that the demand will likely continue to grow.
However, buyers are interested in used cars that are in good shape or those that do not need extensive repairs. So, the damaged Sprinter van, which has been sitting in the dealership yard for the first half of the year, needs sprinter van repair to attract potential buyers. This is because more buyers are inclined toward functional, high-performance vehicles without mechanical problems.
Four of Europe’s five big used vehicle markets saw a decline in sales in March, attributed to the Easter holidays. However, the demand bounced back soon after in April. The second quarter sent mixed signals in the used car market, with two markets registering a rise in demand and the rest showing declines or stability.
Regardless of the temporary fluctuations, all markets saw significant improvements in the first half of 2024. More models were available, so car buyers could easily find their favorite models and powertrains.
France Started Strong But Struggled in the Second Quarter
The first quarter of 2024 was slow even before it was later affected by the Easter holidays. However, April registered a rise in transactions by 10.4 per cent. The transactions increased by 2.7 percent in May and remained relatively stable in June.
Between April and June, 1,357,084 vehicles changed hands, an increase of 4.2 percent from last year’s figures over the same period. The total France used car market transacted 2,693,450 vehicles during the first half of the year.
From the details of the vehicles sold, many buyers want cleaner vehicles with zero emissions. Battery electric cars were in demand in the first quarter, which increased by 64 percent in April, 58 percent in May, and 73 percent. Due to the relatively fewer sales in the second quarter, France used vehicle market grew by 2.9 percent.
The UK Used Car Market Is on a High
The total number of used car transactions rose to 1,963,395 in the second quarter, increasing by 7.2 percent. The UK market is the only used vehicle market among the five big markets that recorded an increase in monthly transactions every month in the first half of 2024.
However, there was no transaction reduction in March due to the Easter holidays and no bounce-back in April. The UK market saw 3,931,318 used vehicles changing hands during the first half of the year, an increase of 6.8 percent compared to last year. The demand for hybrid and battery electric vehicles increased in the UK used vehicle market during this period.
Italy Used Vehicle Sales Declined
The Italy used vehicle market had 1,350,123 that changed hands between January and June 2024. The first quarter was slow, but the second quarter saw increased transactions. The total transactions increased by 8.7 percent compared to the same period last year. However, transactions reduced significantly towards the end of the second quarter, translating to a 0.5 increase in June.
Italy’s new vehicle market has been unstable, unlike the used car market. It has seen many peaks and troughs, with the first quarter registering a double-digit rise in transactions. However, the transactions declined significantly in the last two months of the first half of 2024.
Although Italy’s used car market fluctuated, the number of cars that changed hands declined over the first half of the year. That said, dealerships and used car buyers should adjust expectations in the following months.
Spain Was the Fastest Growing Market
Spain dominated the five used vehicle markets with a total of 522,562 more cars changing hands in Spain compared to last year during the same period. This makes Spain’s market the fastest growing.
The transactions were slow during the first quarter, but things changed in April when there was an increase in transactions by 38.3 percent. May saw an 8.6 percent rise in transactions and a decline of 5.5 percent. As a result, Spain’s used vehicle market closed the first half of the year with an overall increase in sales by 7.5 percent.
Older vehicles between 10 and 15 years were reduced in June, probably due to a boost in plans by the government and dealerships to reduce aging vehicles. About half of the sales during the first half of the year were diesel-powered vehicles. The transactions of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric cars were generally high.
Germany Was Steady Throughout the First Half of the Year
Germany’s pre-owned vehicle market saw a decline in transactions for two months, but the other months compensated for the decline. Since the incentives for battery electric cars were eliminated, Germany’s market has yet to find a balance.
The transactions were slow in March since some were recorded in April due to the Easter holiday. However, the month of May saw an increase in transactions by 4.6 percent, while the transactions in June declined by 1.5. Germany’s overall used vehicle market increased by 9.4 percent compared to 2023, but the new car market could not match the growth rate.
These figures help to highlight the dynamic used vehicle market across Europe. Each market saw an increase or decline in transactions for a valid reason, so understanding used car trends helps buyers and dealers predict how the market will behave in the near future. This knowledge helps car buyers find the best deals, and dealerships adjust their expectations.
