Moving Overseas With Children: Is It Viable?

Moving overseas is a huge life change for anybody. But when you have children and you’re considering a move overseas, you’ll find yourself with much more difficult decisions to make between deciding to move and actually getting to your new home. The change will inevitably be difficult for everyone involved, but there are some steps you can make to ensure that you’re making the right decision and to help make the move as comfortable and positive as possible for your little ones. Here are some things to take into consideration that will help you along the way.

Are You Sure This Is The Best Move?

First, you need to really mull over the decision you’re making. Why are you moving overseas? Any move is big for children and you need to make sure that it’s worth the upheaval that it may cause. Common reasons for moving a whole family overseas include securing a job that can provide a significantly better life, getting closer to a school that can provide a significantly better education or any other change that can really give your kids a better start in life. Jumping from one country to another for the fun of it or simply to experience change and adventure isn’t always best for children, who tend to prefer and benefit from stability and familiarity.

Is the Move Affordable?

Moving overseas is expensive. You’re going to have to consider all of the costs involved and make sure that you can cover them – even if the price of living is cheaper on the other side. When you move a family overseas, you need to consider the cost of passports, flights, visas, international removalists and more. Is this feasible? If yes, you can move ahead.

Will You Have the Support Network You Need?

Many families need a support network. Will you have the support you need in the place you’re moving to? Does your family help out with childcare? Can you afford professional childcare if this support can no longer be in place. Are you comfortable being in contact with your support network over the phone or online?

Be Open and Honest

Talk to your children about the move. It’s always best to be open and honest with them and to make sure that the conversation is two ways. You shouldn’t simply tell your children that you are moving overseas. Talk to them and actually listen to their thoughts and concerns. Yes, you have the final decision. But you should also make sure to ensure that everyone feels heard and considered. Comfort, soothe and reassure your children. This is likely a daunting change for them, even if it is for the best. Explain how they can keep in touch with friends and family. Explain what they can and can’t take with them. This will give a sense of security.

Of course, there are other steps you’ll inevitably take when it comes to moving overseas with your children. But hopefully, the suggestions above should help to get the ball rolling.
