Renovating a small bathroom can be a challenge; finding a way to fit in the suite and still have it feel like a pleasant space can have you scratching your head if you’ve been presented with this problem. Thankfully there are ways you can make the most of a small bathroom so that it’s a pleasant and functional space.
Figure out the best layout
The layout that’s currently in your bathroom may not necessarily be the best configuration. Speak to a bathroom designer or use a 3D room planner to work out the best place to put the toilet, sink, bath and/ or shower and any storage units. This could easily free up some room and make a previously cluttered feeling bathroom look much better.
Consider swapping the bath for a shower
If you’re really tight on space, getting rid of the bathtub and installing a shower cubicle can be a smart choice. It depends on your situation though, if you really enjoy a bath or have children then keeping the bath would probably be your best option. However, if you mainly use the shower anyway and are dealing with a very small room then it’s something to look into.
No matter if you’re keeping the bathtub or installing a shower, small bathrooms can benefit from having a new and efficient pump to carry away gray water. Modern pumps nowadays are compact and less obtrusive, and they’re relatively easy to install. If you plan to add more fixtures, a gray water pump is a must.
Have underfloor heating installed
Heating options such as hydronic floor heating can be pricey, but if you only have a small bathroom then it keeps costs down and can be well worth the investment. It’s a luxurious addition and along with some nice flooring, it can give your bathroom a high end and spa-like feel. Make sure that you check that the flooring you want to place over the top is compatible with underfloor heating- while most are, there are some materials that it can’t be used with.
Invest in high-quality finishes
Speaking of high-end finishes, adding these to your small bathroom can definitely bring the overall finish up a notch. Spend a little extra if you can afford it- tiles instead of splashbacks, nice flooring, more luxurious taps and a heated towel rail in place of the radiator. Replacing the shower curtain with a glass screen can give the illusion of more space and generally look nicer and more high end.
Accessorise effectively
Finally, adding some accessories can make the bathroom look homely- you just need to avoid clutter especially when space is small. A glass apothecary jar filled with soaps or bath bombs is practical while looking nice. A plant, and perhaps a candle are ways you can add a bit of personality without going over the top.
