5 Tricks To Make A Small Bathroom Feel Bigger

While some people are lucky enough to have spacious private spas in their homes, many of us have to make do with tiny bathrooms (in some cases, with not even enough room to fit a bathtub). Your bathroom should be somewhere that you can feel at peace – it shouldn’t feel like a claustrophobic cell. Fortunately, there are several tricks that you can use to make a bathroom seem larger so that it doesn’t feel as cramped. Below are just 5 tricks for making a bathroom feel bigger.

Make use of mirrors

A large mirror on a bathroom wall is a simple trick to make a bathroom feel bigger. By reflecting back on the room, you’ll create the illusion of extra depth. You don’t have to use a single mirror of course – you could use multiple smaller mirrors on a wall. If you don’t have many spare walls, you can also opt for mirrored cabinets or even a mirror on the back of the bathroom door.

Opt for a glass shower door

If half of your bathroom is taken up by the bath or shower, you probably don’t want to opt for an opaque shower curtain as this will cut off half of the room, making the space feel even smaller. A glass shower door allows you to see through into the bath or shower, which will make the room feel more open.

Choose the right tiles

Did you know that the type of tiles you choose can have an impact on how big a room feels? Using larger tiles can often create a feeling of spaciousness (while smaller mosaic tiles are best avoided). You’re also better off using white tiles on a wall or glass bathroom tiles (which can have a similar impact to mirrors). Light it up

Brighter spaces tend to feel bigger. Bathrooms can often end up gloomy because they typically only have small windows. By adding some more artificial lighting to the room, you can make up for the lack of sunlight. Don’t just rely on a single overhead bulb – consider opting for a track lighting system with multiple lights pointing in different directions, or use multiple spotlights across the entirety of the ceiling. You could even look into adding lights on walls.

Get rid of clutter

Clutter can often make a room feel smaller. By freeing up floor space and clearing surfaces of clutter, you’ll create a sense of openness. Start by decluttering any shelves or window sills. Try to keep any excess toiletries contained in a cabinet, basket or bag. A few common sources of bathroom clutter include excess soaps and shampoos, cosmetics such as make-up (try to keep these in a bag or chest), kids’ bath toys (try to keep these in a rack or box) and excess towels (don’t be a towel hoarder). Try to only keep items in the bathroom that need to be there.
