Sleep is one of the most important things that we do every day. It is the time when our body and mind get to rest. When you are sleeping, your body releases hormones that help regulate appetite, moods, and more. Here are 3 tips for getting a better night’s sleep each night!
Watch What You Eat And Drink
Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon or evening – Caffeine is a stimulant that keeps you awake and can keep you up at night. If your schedule requires a caffeine boost then opt for decaf drinks when the sun starts to set so that it doesn’t interfere with your sleep schedule.
Try not to go to bed right after a huge meal – It’s best to give your body time to digest all that food before you try and go to bed.
Alcohol is a depressant so it can be very difficult to fall asleep if you drink too much – Even just one glass of wine before bedtime will disturb your sleep cycle. Your body and brain take time to metabolize alcohol and this process is not conducive for restful sleep. Rather choose a chamomile tea or warm milk as your bedtime beverage.
Sleeping Disorders
If you have tried improving your sleep by sticking to a schedule, eating right before bed, avoiding caffeine and alcohol consumption then it might be time to consider that you may suffer from some form of sleeping disorder. There are several different types of disorders that affect the quality of sleep including insomnia, apnea syndrome, or restless legs syndrome.
Sleep apnea is a condition that causes you to stop breathing during the night. This is caused by a blockage in your airway or throat and it can wake you up from sleep because of the struggle for breath.
Sleep devices such as CPAP machines have been known to help with sleep apnea, however, it has come to light that some of these machines have been causing more damage and so has been recalled. You can go now and make sure the device you may have has not been recalled.
Don’t Over Stimulate Your Brain
Put away your electronics at least an hour before bedtime. This will help you wind down and get ready to go to sleep. If you are constantly over-stimulating your brain before bed, then this can be a big reason that you aren’t sleeping well. For example, if you find yourself scrolling through social media hours after the sun has set or have read one too many suspenseful novels right before hitting the hay it’s time to reevaluate your nighttime routine.
Relax before bed by reading a book, taking a bath, or meditating to relieve stress.
Make your room as dark and quiet as possible when it’s time for you to sleep – If outside light can seep in under the door or between window shades then invest in some blackout curtains so that no sunlight enters your space.
You must make the most of this time by getting a good amount of rest so your body can have enough energy for all your daily activities. Even if you feel like sleeping is just something else on your schedule to fit in, there are so many benefits associated with a deep, restful sleep that you will come to cherish.
