Men’s Fashion: Taking My Husband Out Of His Comfort Zone

I can remember when the Husband and I first got together, just under nine years ago. Whilst most of the time, he was very well presented, he will even admit now that back then, he didn’t really have much idea when it came to clothes or men’s fashion. With a little guidance and some subtle suggestions from me here and there, within a few months, he found himself actually enjoying clothes shopping. He’d found his style.

Over the years he has gladly tried new things, his particular favourite now is the skinny jean. This hasn’t always been the case. He always thought he couldn’t ‘pull it off’, as it were. He is very tall, and very slim so he thought this would just emphasise this and not do anything for him. With encouragement from me and my opinion that if it’s good enough for Russell Brand, it’s good enough for him, he eventually succumbed and tried a pair on. Now he won’t wear any other style!

Having said all of this, when it comes to clothes and men’s fashion, he can still be quite stubborn and stuck in his ways. He doesn’t like to try new things too often and likes to stick with what he knows. I decided it was time to get him to step out of his comfort zone again.

Denim shirts have been popular for some time but were something that the Husband wouldn’t entertain. As he lives in jeans outside of work, he couldn’t get past the idea of ‘double denim’. Of course, I told him to trust me on this one!

Teamed with a different colour denim, this look works. You could also wear this shirt with a darker black jean and even a lighter blue and it would still look great. Wearing the shirt open to show more of the classic white t-shirt would also look great – giving it a more casual appearance.

He’s also a bit of a stickler for wearing the same kind of footwear as well. During the week, because he has to be smart at work, he has to wear smart shoes, so at the weekend, he obviously wants to be more comfortable. But I swear he must have about three of four pairs of the same style boots – just in different colours!

I’ve been trying to get him into a pair of Converse for ages now. I will, eventually, but in the meantime, I picked out these great brown leather look lace up pumps. They work great with the skinny jeans and he tells me that they are really comfortable – which obviously is a winner! These guys won’t put up with uncomfortable shoes in the name of fashion like us girls are likely to!

All in all, this little mini makeover was a success! He likes the shirt and loves the pumps. I think this is a really cool look. The double denim works and proves that you don’t have to look like an eighties throwback when you wear it. I think I even managed to get away with muttering the words ‘I told you so’ whilst taking these pictures!

How about you? Have you given your partner a makeover and how was it received? Maybe you’ve been made over by your other half, how did it go? Do you love men’s fashion? I’d love to know.
