There was a time, a few years ago that I went shopping with my Sister and we both decided to try on a pair of skinny jeans for the very first time. They were a new trend that everybody was wearing and in all honesty, we felt left out. We were still loving our bootcut and kick flare favourites. We didn’t think they would suit us but we thought we would give it a go all the same. I remember the moment vividly. We were in cubicles next to each other and the moment we both pulled ourselves into the straight legged wonders, we simultaneously burst out laughing. We thought they looked that awful on ourselves that we even refused to show each other!
Ten years down the line, both of us hardly ever wear anything but skinny jeans. We are obsessed with them and out of the fourteen pairs of jeans in my wardrobe, only one pair is of the kick flare variety. So what on earth changed?
I can only speak for myself but I know I continued to feel left out. I have always been a big fan of shoes – heels in particular and I fell in love with the skinny jeans and shoe boot/ankle boot combo. I wanted to wear them and so my quest for the perfect skinny jean continued. I eventually found a pair that wasn’t so tight in the leg and with the right boots they were perfect. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Of course, I no longer wear the baggier skinny jean. If anything, I have now gone the complete opposite. I guess what has changed over the years is that skinny jeans have become the norm and anybody who is anybody is wearing them. But why is this do we think? Why has this jean style stood the test of time and why do we love them so much?
The skinny jean has had some pretty bad press over the years but I’m here today to tell you exactly why I love skinny jeans so much.

They are a great casual look
In my opinion, there is no greater a look than that of ripped denim skinny jeans and an ankle boot. Whether it’s with them turned up at the ankles or just left to pucker a bit. When this style is teamed with an oversized jumper or a shirt. It’s perfect. Simple, yet stylish. It’s my go-to look, especially in the Autumn and Spring. The boots I have lived in over recent months are from Anna Fields and purchased from Zalando. I’ve had many a compliment and they go with every pair of jeans I have. Win, win.
Skinny jeans are also great with Converse trainers. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a pair of Converse and when you pair them with skinny jeans they are just the perfect combo – especially if you’re like me and are a busy working Mum. Slip them on before running out of the door for the school run and you can’t go wrong.
They are a great dress up look
I don’t actually remember the last time I went out for a night out other than to a wedding and didn’t wear skinny jeans. You can put them with a nice dressy top and team them with some stunning strappy heels and they are simply to die for. Not only do they make your legs look longer and your bum perter, your feet are instantly transformed (and generally look a couple of sizes smaller!)
I’ve recently fallen in love with the Badgley Mischka range of shoes which you can find online at Lyst. From peep-toe booties to strappy stilettos, they all fit my go-to look perfectly.
More recently, I purchased a pair of hot pink stiletto shoes from Schuh that I can wear with anything. I bought them for a wedding I went to last year but they look simply stunning with black skinny jeans, especially when worn alongside a black leather jacket.
Simply put. Skinny jeans teamed with high heels are the bee’s knees. Don’t let anyone tell you different.
They pull it all in
If you can find the right pair, then they really do suck it all in! High waisted skinny jeans are the best for this. You don’t need to worry about the notorious muffin top with high waisted jeans and they give you the perfect silhouette.
Next do some great Lift, Slim And Shape skinny jeans that cling in all the right places. They even perk your bum up a bit. What more do you want?
They look good on guys AND girls
Personally, I love a guy in skinny jeans. My other half won’t wear anything else these days. He’s tall and slim and whilst he is the perfect shape for them, he does look damn fine in them. At first, it took a bit of persuading, but with a bit of a makeover for my husband, he was convinced.
Skinny jeans are as versatile for men as they are for women. Personally, I think they look great with hi-top trainers or boots, but if you team them with a t-shirt or shirt and a stylish coat they look fantastic and of course, they are bang on trend.
Thank you, Russell Brand for introducing men to skinny jeans. Us girls owe you a great deal!
They don’t get ruined when it rains
Ah, do you remember the age-old problem of the bootcut? You go out in the rain and if you wore them as long as me you would have rain marks half way up your ankle. Sexy, right? No, I didn’t think so.
It doesn’t matter what shoes you wear with skinny jeans, if it’s raining, you’re not going to have this problem. Tuck them inside some boots or pop on your favourite trainers, either way, your jeans will be safe.
So, this is why I love my skinny jeans so much. They are so very versatile. They look good dressed up or dressed down. I can wear all my favourite shoes with them and they won’t be hidden by excess baggy denim and they just look stylish. It doesn’t matter what you wear them with. They just look cool. I’m pretty certain that they will always be a staple in my wardrobe, and I’m really happy about that.
How about you? Do love skinny jeans? Did you dislike them to start with? Perhaps you don’t understand the fuss? Let me know in the comments.
