How Your Body Type Affects The Style Of Your Bespoke Suit

Your Body Type Affects The Style Of Your Bespoke Suit

Men have been wearing suits for centuries, so long now that it’s hard to believe that European males once paraded around in long flowing cloaks and mantles as if they were wizards- at least the affluent ones did, the rest wore what amounted to grain sacks with holes cut out for the head and arms! Fortunately for men, times changed and fashion evolved into the stylish men’s suits we see today.

That doesn’t mean all men’s suits are created equally, they most certainly are not! There is a world 0f difference between finely tailored bespoke suits and the cheap, manufactured suits you can buy off the bargain basement rack. Considering that the old saying about “clothes make the man” is as true today as it ever was, and a finely made suit is what can make all the difference when seeking a big promotion, or making a great impression on a fancy first date, it makes sense to save up for something high quality!

When you decide to invest in an excellent bespoke suit it’s best to have some idea of what you are looking for before walking in so you can help your new best friend the tailor create something that is really going to work for you- always take their advice, they will never steer you wrong! Still, ponder the following points regarding your body’s type.

Heavy Body Type

If you are on the heavier side, robust shall we say, then you might want to go with pleated pants and a three-button jacket that can add height. Never choose wide lapels, spread collars, and wide tie knots, they will only serve to add to your appearance of girth. Heavier men are best advised to wear regular point collars along with proportional accessories, not necessarily slimming, but not widening either. Suits that are vented will provide you with flexibility and comfort.

Thin Body Type

If you happen to be a very thin man, then it would be best for you to choose a single-breast suit with a two or three-button jacket that features wide lapels, vents, and padded shoulders. The addition of a vest with some detail like a flapped pocket can help to add some width. Adding patterns like stripes and plaids can also add size to your thin frame. Beware vertical stripes, they add height that might make you look like a rail!

Tall Body Type

You taller men are best suited by a single-breasted jacket with two or three buttons. It’s advised that you choose straighter-fitting jackets that are loose and sport squared shoulders to make your height appear more proportional. A wider cuff on your pant legs will also lend itself well to that effect.

Short Body Type

The shorter man can add the appearance of extra height by choosing a two or three-button single-breasted jacket featuring side or centre vents. Patterns like chalk stripes, vertical pinstripes, and herringbone can also make you appear a bit taller if that is your wish. Wearing a medium sized trouser break with a narrower cuff can also make a short man appear more in proportion.

Remember, listen to your tailor, they always know best!
