Why Should Young People Get Involved With the Community?

One way to help your child develop on a personal level is to encourage them to get involved with the community. ‘Giving back’ is an important life lesson and one that’s never too early to teach, as explored across many independent schools in the UK. Parents can help, of course, by exploring the many causes and charities that need volunteers and fundraising to help others. Mealtimes are a great place to discuss such matters and will give you the opportunity to find out what interests your child.

Every child is unique, so it’s important to remember that they won’t feel passionate about every single cause, and the community work that they are drawn to might be different to those that interest you. Every avenue of community involvement will teach your child different types of skills and might even shape their choices. For instance, if they become involved with homelessness, they might make certain decisions that help them avoid the same fate. Alternatively, if they become involved with a cause that seeks to save the environment, they might become more conscious about how they dispose of their waste or how they use electrical devices. If they volunteer in a charity shop, they will learn skills in customer service and money management.

Community involvement is a fantastic way to teach young people how the world works as a whole, outside of the small bubble of their family life. What’s more, it’s an opportunity to learn about and respect people’s differences and their hardships, making them more open-minded and empathetic going forward. It opens their eyes to a different way of thinking, allowing them to appreciate what they have and avoid discriminating against others based on things like social ranking, cultural background or other circumstances.

Another benefit of community involvement is that it improves physical health. For instance, your child might be running a marathon to raise money for charity, improving their fitness. They might be building an orphanage in Africa, teaching them carpentry and other skills that they can use in the future while improving their strength. These are just two examples of many ways in which your child can help give back to the community, develop new skills and improve their physical and mental health. Community work is also a way to help with social skills, as it allows children to meet new people and make lifelong friends.

For more information on how to get your child involved in the community and teach them about its importance, you should contact their school. The teachers will likely have some suggestions and might even advise you on the ways in which they, as an establishment, are trying to teach the same lessons to their students.
